The Perryton Rotary Club hosted the November 2021 Students of the Month at their weekly meeting on Thursday, November 4. Saleen Nyman and Zane Eylar, along with their parents, attended the meeting and were recognized for their achievements. Each student shared about their high school experiences and received a plaque to commemorate the award. They also get a special parking place at PHS for the rest of the month.
Saleen is the daughter of Justina Joseph and she has a sister, Sabrina Nyman.
Her activities include Powerlifting, where she earned a State Championship; Band, where she’s a drum major; Cheerleading, National Honor Society, Track & Field, and One-Act Play.
Math and Physics are her favorite subjects. She says that’s “because problem solving is interesting and the concepts show the mechanics behind ordinary things.”
Not surprisingly, Powerlifting Coach Arruda is listed as her most influential teacher. “He has taught me that no matter the situation, I can achieve anything as long as I persevere,” Saleen says.
She advises underclassmen to give everything a try because “nobody knows whether they’ll be successful until they try.”
Saleen plans to attend either The University of Texas or Texas Tech to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering. She also wants to compete in powerlifting at the collegiate and professional levels.
Zane is the son of Sean and Angela Eylar and has two brothers, Gus and Cy. He plays Varsity Baseball and Football and is a member of NHS and the Student Council.
AP Biology is Zane’s favorite subject because “That’s what I want to be my major in college.”
He lists Coach Hodge and Mr. McLarty as his two favorite teachers. He says. “Both of these men have strict classrooms yet they know how to keep the class entertained.”
He advises younger students to “Never be afraid to pursue your goals and never be afraid to stand up for yourself, many times this means walking alone.” Zane is already pursuing one of his goals as he has started his own taxidermy business.
He plans to attend Seward County Community College on a baseball scholarship and is looking into Wildlife Biology but is “keeping my interest in taxidermy alive.”
In 15 years he sees himself owning his business, supporting his family, staying connected with his baseball family, and being an active conservationist.
